DANCER, PERFORMER,DANCE TEACHER, PRODUCER AND COSTUME DESIGNER

Urša Sekirnik is a performer, dancer and dance pedagogue currently working between Barcelona and Slovenia.

Urša Sekirnik graduated at SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) in 2011 and also has a diploma in Cultural Studies from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Ljubljana, where she graduated in 2014.

She is currently working as a performer/dancer, dance pedagogue and producer. Her work encompasses a broader field of performing arts. In addition to her work in the field of contemporary dance, she also incorporates other performance practices and artistic genres into her work.

In her work she is looking for ways of finding a common ground with the audience, be it on an emotional level by sharing a personal story (as in her works The visible Illusions of a frozen body, 2011/2012 and The Other Void, 2013) or through (ab)using channels such as blogs (Arriving.Soon., 2011) and web shops (À la Cart Performance Webshop, 2014). In her performance RADIO HIT (2018) she explored the relationship between pop music and dance, personal visions of the audience in relation to music hits and ways of involving the audience both in the creative process and final execution of the performance. In 2020 she started a new project Fent Cua / While waiting where she, in collaboration with Jou Serra, explores the notion of waiting, specifically waiting in line. In the recent years she started a close collaboration with Mireia de Querol, resulting in two projects: Bestiari Dixit, a piece comissioned by APdC and Libraries of Catalonia, was premiered in september 2022, and Interlúdic (2024), an intergenerational participatory experience. Since 2023 she is collaborating with Aja Zupanec in the (P)ogled project, a project that looks for ways of inhabiting well known cities and places with a calmer, more focused presence and gaze.

As a dancer, she has been closly collaborating with the Barcelona-based collective Big Bouncers since 2016, in their pieces Plancton (with 200 re-reuns), Plata (Award for Best Street Performance (Critics' Choice – Premis de la Crítica 2024) Nomination for Best Street Performance at the Barcelona Theatre Awards (2024), O.V.N.I. and Jungle and other projects. She is collaborating with Emma Villacecchia in her piece Ritmia and NeoPicnic, and was a dramaturg for Aja Zupanec's project Liter of Glitter. In the past, she performed in Jerome Bel’s work The Show Must Go On and has been collaborating with Nina Jan (Slovenia), Joana Serra (Spain), Collectif PoPs (Spain), Phoebe Osborne (USA), Jordi Ferreiro (Spain), Carolina Alejos and Silvia Elgarrista (Spain), among others.

In 2010 she, together with Nina Jan, co-founded KUD NUM, a multi-disciplinary artistic collective and production house based in Škofja Loka, Slovenia, that offers creative space for artistic production and contemporary art events in local environment and promotes its work home and abroad. In collaboration with Nina Jan, she created rpojects such as À la Cart Performance webshop, Poligon of Anger, Angry Quiz, Donation Archive Installation, among others.

In 2019 she became part of the La Visiva space for creation (Barcelona), where she, together with Anna Rubirola and Mireia de Querol, manages different activities in relation to creation and movement.

She has been invited to several residencies (Graner - centre de creació de dansa i arts vives, CC Can Felipa, Can Gassol, New Dance Alliance New York; nunArt, Barcelona; tragantDansa, Barcelona; Muelle3, Bilbao; Estruch Sabadell, Spain; CUK Kino Šiška, Ljubljana; CC Albareda, Barcelona; Dance Theatre Ljubljana; Moveo, Barcelona,…) and developed her work in collaboration with national and international centers (Emanat, Aksioma – Institute for Contemporary Arts, Ljubljana; CUK Kino Šiška, Ljubljana; Zavod Bunker, Ljubljana; Eye Amsterdam; Drugo More, Rijeka; Antic Teatre, Barcelona…)

She has also been teaching contemporary dance in several different contexts and schools. As a teacher, she places great importance on the expressive capabilities of each student, on personal exploration within the proposed task, on the importance of trying, experimenting, daring and investigating the possibilities of one's own body, while seeking and emphasizing the requirement for the precision of the task.

In the past years she became interested in costume design and made costumes for own work (Fent Cua, Bestiari Dixit) and works of other directors and choreographers (Carlota Grau, Anna Rubirola/Big Bouncers, LaSubita).
